Yasmin Aleese Obie

My name is Yasmin Aleese Obie and I am from Newark, New Jersey. I went to Piscataway Vocational Technical High School in Piscataway, New Jersey and graduated in 2005.

I am a senior and English Secondary Education and Women and Gender Studies major at The College of New Jersey and anticipate graduating in 2010. I picked my major because I love English, both reading and writing and I want to instill in others the same love that I have. I hope that I will someday be an amazing teacher that my students look up to, just as I have looked up to several of my previous teachers, not only as educators, but as mentors. I will be studying abroad in South Africa at the American International school of Johannesburg in hopes of become a well rounded teacher who has a variety of experiences and a broad educational background. I have been nominated for and received honors from Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. I am the currently on my second term as president for The National Council of Negro Women and am a member and previous Executive Chair of Community Service for WILL, Women in Learning and Leadership.
Without Harcourt I do not know where I would be at this moment. I have had ups and downs and Harcourt has allowed me to see that my dreams are attainable and I watch several of them get fulfilled. I hope that you will benefit from this scholarship as much as I have and reach for your dreams, not only for yourself, but those in your community. Harcourt was a way out for me and by being able to get out I empower others to follow me. I hope that you seek to do the same.
If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it. -William Arthur Ward
