Established by Ellen Knowles Harcourt, the Alfred Harcourt Foundation provides scholarships for low-income students who are interested in public service careers such as teaching, nursing and other fields and who show promise of future contributions to society.

Starting with the 2008-09 academic year, the foundation will be funneling its support to The College of New Jersey and the Teacher Academy and Hunter College at the City University of New York (CUNY). These colleges and universities nominate candidates for Ellen Knowles Harcourt Scholarships. An advisory committee of distinguished educators then reviews their applications. The Foundation's Board of Directors awards the Harcourt Scholarships upon the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on the Selection of Harcourt Scholars.

The Ellen Knowles Harcourt Scholarship is for students who have established a record of achievement despite having endured unusually difficult life circumstances. Applicants should show extreme financial need along with the qualities of intellect and character that will enable them to be leaders in their community.
